David Pendelton Oakerhater: Deacon and Missionary
A warrior and leader of the Cheyenne Nation in Oklahoma, David P. Oakerhater lead Native Americans into battle against the United States over Native land disputes in the mid to late 1800's. He along with 27 other Native leaders were captured and sent to military prison in Florida. There an Army Captain helped them to learn English and they were exposed to the Christian faith. After this he moved north to study for ministry and subsequently moved back to Oklahoma where he helped to establish missions and schools among the Cheyenne until his death in 1931.
